Coaching in Action

Example l – Accompanying Change Process in the OR

The optimal organization of operating rooms is for many hospitals a major challenge. These concerns are often met be creating positions which are responsible for the OR coordination.

The Project

Our customer had appointed physicians and nurses to work as OR managers in different locations of their municipal holding. This decision brought about significant changes: first, the new OR managers had to face a role change from team member to leader. Second, the whole team structure changed radically.

What We Did

We supported the new OR managers and the teams in their communication with head physicians and the management. Target-driven controlling and reporting based on the OR-Benchmark was implemented.

In addition, we trained two of the OR managers for a role as internal consultants. Over a period of six months several topics were addressed in four half-day workshops:

  • Handling the new role
  • How to communicate properly
  • To cope successfully with conflicts

Example II – One-to-One Coaching

Leading must be learned.  Physicians, however, usually do not learn leadership skills in their course of studies. Thus many physicians may need a coach on their side to become  successful leaders.

What we did

A internationally renowned specialist became assistant medical director in a university hospital. The new position brought about new duties and responsibilities. In our coaching sessions we developed goals, identified useful resources and defined steps to achieve these goals.

By the end of the coaching process the customer had gained respect and acceptance by his colleagues and even managed to achieve a better work-life balance.
